Mission and Vision
St. Andrew's Mission
St. Andrew's is a warm, welcoming, and diverse Christian community on a spiritual journey dedicated to serving God and the needs of others.
St. Andrew's Vision
The vision of St. Andrew's is to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.
Who is St. Andrew?
 |
Andrew was a fisherman who lived in the early part of the first century B.C.E. Andrews special gift was his willingness to invite other people to come to meet Jesus.
The Gospel according to John tells us that Andrew was a disciple of Jesus cousin, John the Baptist. When Jesus came to be baptized, John the Baptist pointed Jesus out and said, Here is the Lamb of God. (John 1:29) Andrew and another disciple went with Jesus to spend the day with him and to hear him teach. Andrews first act after his initial encounter with Jesus was to find his brother, Simon Peter, and bring him to Jesus. Andrew very well may have been the first missionary.
Andrew wasnt part of Jesus inner circle of disciples, but he is always mentioned in the lists of disciples. When a crowd of people listening to Jesus became hungry, Andrew was the disciple who brought a boy with loaves and fishes to Jesus. A crowd of over 5,000 people was fed.
Tradition tells us that Andrew suffered a martyrs death. We celebrate St. Andrews feast day on November 30th. People of Scottish descent celebrate Andrew as the patron saint of Scotland. |
